Transatlantic Mail from Trinidad

1849 (Sep. 20) Trinidad to New York, N.Y., folded letter with red "1/-" prepaid manuscript rating, carried by RMSPC Eagle from Trinidad to St. Thomas and then RMSPC Great Western to New York arriving Oct. 9, New York red "5" circled due h.s. for 5¢ inland postage due, Very Fine, a scarce 5¢ open mail rate from the Carribean to the U.S.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Under the U.S.-G.B. convention of 1848, letters from British possessions in the Carribean had to be delivered to the U.S. free of charge, meaning all transit fees to the U.S. had to be prepaid. The remaining U.S. inland postage was to be collected upon delivery.
