Transatlantic Mail - Printed Matter from U.S. (1860 to 1875)

1866-67 (circa) New York, N.Y. to Rio grande do Sul, Brazil, printed circular endorsed "pr Guilding Star via Rio de Janeiro" and prepaid with 1861, 3¢ rose, horizontal pair, tied by NYFM geometrics, blue crayon "40" reis postage due rating, Very Fine, an exceedingly scarce printed matter use to South America.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $400 - 600.

The 6¢ postage prepaid the rate for 6-9 unsealed circulars. This was the domestic rate required for circulars sent by steamship to a country with which U.S. had no convention. Although the exact date can not be determined, Guiding Star made only three round voyages for the line departing New York on 22 September 1866, 21 December 1866, and 23 September 1867.
