1852 (Sep. 19) Montreal, Canada to Cognac, France, folded letter with red "Montreal L.C. SP 19 1852" origin d.s., carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Sep. 22 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 4, red London (10.5) backstamp with matching "Canada / &Art. 12" framed h.s., red Calais (10.6) entry cds, Paris (10.6) and Cognac (10.7) backstamps, manuscript "17" decimes due rating for 5 decimes French internal postage plus 12 decimes fee to England, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Beginning in January 1846, unpaid letters sent to France, via Great Britain, from Canada and Jamaica (except letters originating from Kingston), were exchanged under Article 12 of the Letter Bill. The bulk exchange rate associated with such letters was established at 4 shillings per ounce, the "Canada / & Art. 12" handstamps applied to denote such.
