Lot 1934

1864 (Sep. 14, Nov. 1) From Battery K, 4th U.S. Artillery, Near Petersburg Va., two letters from Private William Selfe of Beck's Battery at the Battle of Boydton Plank Road, this vivid first person detailed account of Grant's great blunder at Petersburg, contains very relevant new information about the battle not in the Official Record, as well as startling new details contradictory to those in the O.R. concerning General Hancock, Selfe's letter demonstrates that General Warren actually rescued General Hancock from capture by Confederate troops after Hancock foolishly disobeyed Grant's orders to retreat, lot includes a summary of the battle, comments, transcription of Selfe's letter and original faulty transmittal cover for one of the letters, F.-V.F., This is a significant historical letter, whose contents dramatically correct errors in the Official Report.
