Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Greenish Blue, vertical pair, four margins all around, tied by the "Richmond, Va Jan 1" (Powell Type 5f) on light coarse paper cover addressed to Mrs. Capt J. J. Allen, Waskey's Mills Botetourt Co., Va., Very Fine double rate cover.

John James Allen (b1831) enlisted as a private in Co K 57th Va Inf 6/10/1861 and was promoted Capt 7/20/1861. He was wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/1862 losing an arm. He resigned 8/23/1862 on account of his wound. After the war, he was a lawyer, judge, and a legislator for Botetourt County.
