Safford, Graham Co. Ariz., Apr 2, 1888 (Graham), town & county cds with barred duplex (Meyer 6, rarity 5) on 1887, 2¢ green entire to Tucson, Very Fine, the only recorded example of this town and county date stamp, ex Dike.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

A group of farmers found the first American Colony in the Gila Valley in 1874. They settled the site of Safford, naming it for Gov. Anson Safford, the Territorial Governor and founder of its free education system, who was then visiting the valley. A post office was set up in Bailey's Store March 5, 1875 with Joshua Bailey as postmaster.
