Leeward Islands to Zululand

Lot 131 P

New Zealand, 1856-73, 2d greenish blue, imperforate plate proof, on thick unwatermarked paper, margins large encompassing small portion of adjacent stamp at top to clear at left, strong bright color, Very Fine; with 2013 R. Odenweller certificate and statement of testing protocols.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A MYSTERIOUS AND UNIQUE PROOF OF THE 2D CHALON HEAD ISSUE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN AND DATE.

According to Robert Odenweller, this proof could be from either the 1st and 2nd plates, but it is unlikely the former as they did not produce any color proofs from the first plate. The mostly likely periods would have been in New Zealand in 1855-56 and 1861-62. Tests where conducted on this proof at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, concentrating primarily on X-ray fluorescence. Unfortunately no conclusive determination could be made as to the printer of this unique proof.

Realized: $3,000
