1863 (Dec. 13) New York N.Y. to Vienna, Austria, red white and blue Magee patriotic cover from the Angell correspondence bearing 1¢ blue (63), 2¢ black (73) and 12¢ black (69), all tied by three NYFM six-section grids, red "N. York Hamb. Pkt. 'Paid 12' Nov 28" exchange cds, carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Nov. 28th to Hamburg arriving Dec. 12th, Hamburg (12.13) backstamp and matching "Franco" handstamp on front, Vienna (12.15) arrival backstamp; some light water staining at sides, 12¢ small tear top right, Very Fine appearance, ex-Matthies, Allen; signed by Ashbrook on reverse.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

AN EXTREMELY RARE USAGE OF THE 2¢ BLACK JACK ISSUE ON AN ANGELL PATRIOTIC COVER TO AUSTRIA.

Illustrated in Lane on page 3. Only four covers with Black Jacks were offered in the 1969 Matthies sale.
