Airmail, 1971, 9¢ & 11¢ Airmail Issue - Designer George Vander Sluis Portfolio, assembly of original artwork, final designs, correspondence, publicity articles and ads, first day ceremony, etc., for the 1971 9¢ & 11¢ Airmail Issues; the collection contains the first hand drawn sketches of both issues, 14 different original essay models for the 9¢ Airmail issue (four signed) and 6 signed essay models for the 11¢ Airmail issue, a final artist photo proof of the accepted designs, letter of correspondence from the Post Office Department Stamp Advisory Committee and other philatelic and non-philatelic institutions regarding publicity of the new issues, billing for the Design and Completed Art Work for both issues, articles regarding George Vander Sluis and the airmail issue for publications including the May 1971 edition of the Airpost Journal (11¢ Design featured on the front cover) with article illustration of a first sketch and some of the essay models contained in this portfolio, press releases, First Day ceremony programs and a host of FDC's addressed by Vander Sluis; a wonderful and unique assembly of original works from designer of these U.S. Airmail issues, Very Fine.Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio George Vander Sluis studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Broadmoor Academy, later renamed the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Vander Sluis is noted for his acrylic paintings. Aside from his personal artistic endeavors, Vander Sluis was an excellent teacher. From 1940-43, Vander Sluis taught at the Broadmoor Academy during the winter sessions. From 1945-82, he also taught at Syracuse University as a Professor of Painting and Drawing. In 1970, he was made the associate Dean of the School of Arts and was also a Chairman of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. In 1951 and 52, Vander Sluis was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Later, in 1975, the Ford Foundation granted him the title "Outstanding Educator of America". Later, for his lifetime of achievements in fine art, Vander Sluis was awarded the Jurors Award and the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery Award of 1958 and again in 1969.
