Confederacy, Adams Ex. Co., Louisville, Ky., Aug 2, 1861, bold strike of cds on orange cover from the C.S.A. to Waterbury Conn. with manuscript "2/- C.H.P." express charge (two bits, or 25¢) - "C.H.P." are the initials of Charles H. Phelps and at the right "Confederacy Postage Paid 20c", bearing U.S. 3¢ dull red (26) vertical pair tied by two strikes of blue "Louisville Ky., Aug 3, 1861" duplex, forwarded upon arrival with "Waterbury Ct., Aug 9 1861" cds to Branford Point; backflap replaced improving top edge, Fine appearance, Unlisted in the Walske census.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Charles H. Phelps was the express company agent in Augusta, who was later prosecuted in Confederate District Court in Savannah for transporting letters in violation of the law.
