1852 (Oct. 15) Montevideo, Uruguay to Philadelphia Pa. via Chagres, Panama, folded letter endorsed "Via Rio" and carried privately to forwarder in Chagres where red on white illustrated December 5th 1852 "Express Messenger to New Orleans" express label applied endorsed Per Steamer Louisiana, out of mails via New Orleans to New York, bold strike of "New-York, Ship 7 cts, Dec 20" due cds for 5¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine and unrecorded by Rowe.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

There is no clear indication which forwarding agent applied this label. It is believed that either Gooding or Cowan, Chagres forwarding agents during this period are most likely.
