Fort Scott, Kansas Territory to Lecompton, Kansas Territory, 1858 (May 16), orange cover to Hon. J.W. Denver, Governor of Kansas Territory, endorsed "Express" at lower left, docketed as from "Judge Williams" at left and pencil "May 16, 1858" dating at bottom; small opening tear, Fine and scarce Kansas Territory military express use.

This Kansas Territorial cover was sent via military express from Fort Scott to Lecompton. James W. Denver was the Territorial Governor of Kansas from December 1857 to November 1858. Judge Joseph J. Williams of the Third Judicial District of Kansas was pre-slavery and he supported the Lecompton Constitution. He was writing Denver to undermine the referendum that suspended this constitution in January 1858. Several original letters have survived, including four in the Wichita State University Archives.
