Hawaii, Late Letter Mail (759, 1RRRR), clear strike of purple double-circle handstamp on 1884 cover bearing 5¢ ultramarine (39) horizontal pair with selvage at right, tied by target cancels and "Honolulu H.I. Aug. 15" cds to Liverpool, England, reverse with magenta "San Francisco Cal, Stm. Meyer-Harris No. 759    Estimate $500 - 750.

The "Late Letter, Mail" circular handstamp was known used July 2nd 1882 to October 1st 1884. The marking reflects payment of an extra fee for processing a late letter. Starting in mid-1882, letters brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment were charged an additional 5¢ fee to have their letters included in the mail. The fee was charged more to discourage the practice of bringing in late letters than for revenue.

Realized: $850
