New Zealand, 1857, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d brown, imperf, unwatermarked, horizontal pair, just clear to large margins including part of adjacent stamp at top, tied by two clear strikes of numeral "16" barred ovals, matching "Lyttelton, New-Zealand, JY 6 1861" origin backstamp on part folded cover to Staffordshire, England, endorsed "per "Prince Alfred" via Marseilles" at top, reverse with Higham Ferrers (9.16) arrival cds; reduced at bottom with back flap removed and small repair, a Very Fine use, Marcel Stanley, Robson Lowe, November 1977, lot 520

This letter was carried per "Northam" that departed Sydney July 27th to Marseilles arriving Sep. 13th, then to Southampton arriving Sep. 19th. Prior to September 1863, the rate was the standard 6d per ½oz plus 3d per ¼oz for the cross-France portion, so this item weighed less than ½oz. From 14/3/1860, the P&O route was varied to Sydney-Melbourne-Albany-Galle.
