N.Z. MY 13, 64" backstamp on registered cover to Westminster, England, endorsed "Via Invercargill" at bottom and "Via Marseilles" at top, bold strike of large red "Registered, Invercargill, No. "1076" MY 16, 1864" double-oval, red London Registered (7.13) entry cds, reverse with manuscript "Bullen" (gold mining camp); small cover faults at top with some backing paper improving edge, otherwise Very Fine and rare registered use, Len Jury, Spink, October 2015, lot 2182. Sent to connect with the P&O steamer "Madras" leaving Sydney May 21st 1864, arriving Suez July 4th. Sent overland to Alexandria then by P&O steamship "Euxine" leaving July 6th and arriving at Marseilles July 12th. The mail "Via Marseilles" arrived 36 hours earlier than the "all sea" route.
