"President" Maiden Voyage, Liverpool Aug. 1st - New York Aug. 17th 1840, folded letter to Montreal, Canada with red "Ship-Letter, Liverpool, 31JY31, 1840" crowned rimless cds and matching "8" pence rating handstamp, endorsed "p. President Steamer", red "New-York, Ship, Aug 18" cds with manuscript "20¾" due rating for 18¾¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Canada manuscript "1/5½" due rating for 11d cy U.S. debit plus 4½d cy inland, Very Fine and scarce maiden voyage, ex-Pullin.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The "President" was a vessel of the British & American Steam Navigation Company, which also owned the "Sirius" and the "British Queen". The "President" was lost without a trace on her third eastbound sailing.
