U.S. Consulate, Valparaiso, blue cachet handstamp on cover sent from Capt Edward Coffin from the Isla La Mocha to his wife in Nantucket, Mass., circular New York "Steamship 20" handstamp applied upon arrival, pencil "Mocha" and "1864" docketing at top, F.-V.F. Estimate $150 - 200.
Captain Edward Coffin was well known on the Pacific coast run. Later he captained a U.S. whaling ship and used the island of La Mocha as a weather haven and watering place on his journeys further South.
