1898, Trans-Miss., 4¢ orange, diagonal bisect, brigth color, tied by "Brooklyn N.Y., Jul 12 '98" duplex on buff cover to New York City, light strike of purple "Held for Postage" oval and "Brooklyn, N.Y. Jul 8 '98" duplex adjacent, pencil "Due 2¢" underneath 2¢ pink (279Bg) cancelled by partial strike of barred oval, additional purple "Held for Postage and forwarded on receipt of Stamp." two-line handstamp, New York (7.12) arrival backstamps, Very Fine and choice use of unaccepted bisect.
Scott No. 287 var.    Estimate $400 - 600.

The use of bisected stamps was not authorized, but generally tolerated by postmasters. This is a scarce use showing the proper disallowed used and the "Held for Postage" handling.
