The Citizens Volunteer Hospital was privately funded and established on September 5, 1862 to provide extended care to seriously wounded Civil War soldiers before their reassignment to other hospitals. It was situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, & Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue in Philadelphia, growing to over 25,000 square feet and caring for over 30,000 troops in the first year of its existence. It operated until August 11, 1865.
