Lot 2155 o

Hawaii, 1857, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, Jackson type II numeral with short flag, light red and black town cancels, clear to large margins, small thin and tiny tear at upper right, Very Fine appearance; with 1981 H.P.S. certificate.
Scott No. 7    $10,000.

A EXTREMELY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5¢ ON 13¢ PROVISIONAL BEARING THE JACKSON MANUSCRIPT SURCHARGE.

There was a shortage of 5¢ stamp just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson around the start of 1857. This necessitated the 5¢ provisional manuscript surcharge, with most being made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark (Type I) having a numeral with a long flag, and the rest by Jackson (type II) having a numeral with short flag with only four examples recorded. New supplies of the 5¢ 1857 Issue (Scott 8) on thin white wove paper were received at the end of June 1857.

Realized: $2,000
