24c Mistaken Rate

1860 (c., Nov. 26) Mount XXXXXX, XX to Tiefenbach, Prussia, orange cover bearing 12¢ black (36) horizontal pair tied by "Mount XXXX,XXX, Nov 26" cds, New York red "3" credit handstamp obliterated with circular grid, correct "N.York, Hamb. Pkt., 'Paid 10' Dec 1" credit exchange cds, carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Dec. 1st to Hamburg arriving Dec. 16th, Hamburg (12.16) transit backstamp and bold "Franco" straightline, F.-V.F. prepaid for the 24¢ "Mistaken" rate.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The sender prepaid the cover for the "mistaken" 24¢ rate, which confused the New York exchange office who initially struck the red "3" credit handstamp used on mail at the 24¢ rate to Great Britain.
