Hawaii - 1853-61 King Kamehameha III Issues

Lot 2189 o

Hawaii, 1857, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, type I (Clark) surcharge, large margins to just shaving frameline at bottom right, deep fresh color, canceled by light San Francisco cds, Very Fine, a very rare stamp in sound condition; with 1977 & 2009 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 7    $10,000.

There was a shortage of 5¢ stamp just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson around the start of 1857. This necessitated the 5¢ provisional manuscript surcharge, with most being made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark (Type I) having a numeral with a long flag, and the rest by Jackson (Type II) having a numeral with short flag. New supplies of the 5¢ 1857 Issue (Scott 8) on thin white wove paper were received at the end of June 1857.
