Foreign Mails - 1834 to 1852

1834 (Jul. 20) India to Pittsburg, Pa. via Philadelphia, folded cover with partial letter from Rev. J.C. Lowrie while missionary in India, carried by private ship entering U.S. mails with red "Phila. 8 Dec" octagon datestamp and matching Full-Rigged Ship octagon handstamp with red manuscript "20¾" rating for 18¾¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F.

Rev. John Cameron Lowrie (1808-1900) was appointed in 1832 by Western Foreign Missionary Society to open a mission in India. With Mr. & Mrs. William Reed, sailed from Philadelphia May 30, 1833, arriving in Calcutta Oct. 15th with his wife dying Nov. 21st. He carried on determined to found a mission station in some unoccupied area, finally reaching Lodiana Nov. 5th 1834. Broken by poor health and his bereavement of his wife's death, he returned to the U.S. in 1836.
