(Hempfield Railroad) Hempfield R.R., two covers with route agent cds strikes in blue and black, first circa 1863 cover with blue "Hempfield R.R. Oct 17" cds and matching open grid cancel tying faulty 3¢ rose (65) east to Washington Pa.; second with black "Hempfield R.R. Jan 25" cds with matching circular cancel ties 3¢ rose (65) to Fairmont W.V., carried east for transfer to the B&O to Fairmont, still Very Fine appearing and exceptionally rare railroad, Rarity X as Unique, both ex-Hannen, former also ex-Towle. Hempfield Railroad a little 32½ mile railroad that had but one route agent in service for Route 2649 opening once daily for $3,234 a year, commencing Oct. 1, 1858. It ran from Washington, Pa. to Wheeling, Va. and was notable only for reaching its western terminus via a tunnel beneath a cemetery.
