Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) on two separate folded covers to San Francisco, one franked with single 1851 3¢ & second franked with two singles, first tied by cds & unpaid "5"¢ in circle rate handstamp, grid applied over stamp & rate to indicate postage paid, 2nd cover with singles tied by four strikes of negative "5"¢ unpaid rate handstamp, included are two stampless cover with Sonora three rim postmarks with these rate handstamps for comparison, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 210    

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Black cds (Williams TUO-1390) on small 1853 cover to Michigan franked with vert pair 1851 3¢ dull red (top stamp defective) tied by grid cancel with bold strike of the very rare "Steamer Winfield Scott" two line handstamp in red, cover with tiny stain at top & rounded corner at bottom right, Extremely Fine, one of the finest of the seven known covers recovered from the wreck of the "Steamer Winfield Scott" and thought to be the unique example franked with stamps, Illustrated in color in "Letters of Gold" and is accompanied by much research material.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

The "Winfield Scott" was a 1,291-ton steamer built in New York City in 1851, which was put into service along the Pacific Coast route in 1852. On December 2, 1853, she was stranded off Anacapa Island in the Santa Barbara Channel and lost, but the mails, passengers and cargo were saved. Nine examples of this two-line handstamp are recorded, of which two were carried before the "Winfield Scott" was commissioned into the Pacific service.

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Cds (Williams TUO-1400) on cover to Tennessee with lovely blue cameo corner card of Furniture Manufacture of Sonora, franked with 1855 10¢ green, type II tied by manuscript cancel, minor wear, F.-V.F., a very rare corner card, Pictured in Letters of Gold.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Black cds tying 1857 10¢ green type III (well centered with trivial corner crease) on orange cover to New Jersey with attractive embossed cameo corner card of "J.B. Bannerman, Card Seal & General Engraver, San Francisco" in blue, different colorless embossed corner card on back flap, some edge wear & light cover fold, Fine and attractive, Pictured in Letters of Gold.

Lot of 16 covers & one folded letter with various postmarks of Sonora (Williams TUO-1390, 1400, 1410), a nice variety of usage & frankings are present such as forwarded covers, postal entires, stampless, hand drawn patriotic, embossed cameo corner card, folded cover & one cover with nice contents, etc., mixed condition, F.-V.F., worth careful inspection.
