(Experimental Perforations) 3¢ Dull Red, Unofficial "Chicago" Perf 12½, deep rich color, intact perfs all around, tied by perfect bold strike of "Chicago Ill. Sep. 12, 1856" circular datestamp on lady's small cover to Canesville Ill, Extremely Fine, a pristine cover bearing the 1851 3¢ issue with Chicago perforations, one of the few known completely sound examples; with 1986 and 2005 P.F. certificates.

Lot 90    

(Experimental Perforations) 3¢ Brownish Carmine, Type I, Unofficial "Chicago" Perf 12½, centered to right with portion of adjoining stamp at left, perforations all around, tied by "Chicago Ill. Sep., 1856" cds's on cover to Evansville Ill.; stamp with trivial toned perfs at top left, F.-V.F., a fresh cover with the rare 3¢ Chicago Perforation; with 1970 and 2010 P.F. certificates.

Wilson Hulme recorded 40 examples used on cover and 30 used off-cover in his 1997 census in Chronicle 175. Since that time a small number of additional examples have been discovered.

(Experimental Perforations) 3¢ Dull Red, Type I, Unofficial "Chicago" Perf 12½, position 96L6, bright color, scissors-trimmed perfs at top, tied by "Chicago Ill. Jun. 12, 1856" cds on buff cover to Portsmouth N.H., manuscript. "From R. K. Swift" endorsement at bottom left and addressed in his hand; cover with partial backflap and minor edge wear, Very Fine, a remarkable sound example of the 3¢ Chicago perf on cover; with 2009 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 11; $8,000    Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

This cover was sent to the postmaster in Portsmouth N.H. by R. K. Swift, the banker and businessman who promoted the perforating machine invented by Dr. Hadley in Chicago.

Lebanon Aug 22, 1856" by large Boston "Paid" grid handstamp, light red Boston, Mass. cds alongside, reverse with red forwarding oval "Forwarded by J.M. Gordon, Treasurer A.B.C.F.M., Boston" handstamp, Very Fine.

Pkt., 21, Jul 21" exchange cds, red London receiving backstamp, Very Fine and choice, a scarce and attractive usage.

(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type I, tied by blue "Cincinnati, O., Dec 11" cds on 1856 folded letter to South Windham, Ct., red "R" registry handstamp and manuscript number below, magenta numbering at bottom applied in New York City; file folds with one affecting stamp, F.-V.F., a very scarce early registered usage.
