New York, N.Y., 1845, 5¢ black on bluish, margins to touched, tied by blue ms. stroke and rim of "New York 11 Jun" cds on cover to Boston, Mass., red "Paid" arc h.s. at left; letter affected by some charring, a F.-V.F. usage.

Lot 2562    

Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, signatures of each, Freeman Rawdon, Neziah Wright and George Hatch, on separate 1843-47 folded letters to Comptroller to certify orders in printing banknotes for various banks, two of the packages are noted to be sent by Pomeroy & Co. express, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, was one of the most prominent printing and engraving firms in nineteenth-century America and was the first to receive a government contract for designing and printing U.S. postage stamps including the 1847 issue.

Lot 2563    

1847, 5¢ red brown, tied by manuscript and red grid cancels on folded letters to Onaodaga Hill, N.Y., red "New York, Feb 15" cds alongside, with printed humorous Valentine with California Gold Rush caricature enclosure depicting miners being attacked and a sack of "1000 oz" of gold the apparent object of the scuffle, vignette framed with gold leaf "nuggets" and 6-line poem…The Placer we hear about, from old and young. The place who's fame by every urchin's sung. Shall be my home, on Sacramento's shore. I'll swing the pickax, for the Gold ore. 'Except' Fair Lady you consent to be, Amalgamed with the Gold that's now in me.; lower right portion of stamp missing, otherwise F.-V.F., a very early California Gold Rush caricature in combination with the 1847 5¢ issue.

1847, 5¢ dark brown, large even margins, red cancel (which appears to be multiple strikes of a numeral "5" handstamp) on 1850 folded cover postmarked matching "Alexandria, Va., Sep 17" cds; minor tone spots at edges and along file fold, one of which barely affects the top margin of stamp, otherwise Very Fine.

1847, 10¢ black, double transfer (type "D"), position 41R1, showing double transfer of left and bottom frame lines, large margins all around, tied by blue grid cancel on 1850 folded letter to Clarksburg, Va., matching "Philadelphia, Pa., 10, Jul 12" integral rate postmark; small repaired erosion spot on cover, still Extremely Fine, a Superb Example of the 1847 10¢ Black Double "D" Transfer on Cover, ex Knapp (with original lot number affixed).
