Putnam's Improved Spring Bed, illustrated corner card on orange buff cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) tied by bold Boston frame "Paid" cancel and 3¢ rose (65), nat. s.e. at right, tied by partial matching strike and partial red "Boston Mass May 14" cds, military addressed to Samuel P. Putnam, Company K. 14th Mass Reg't at Washington D.C., prepaid 1¢ carrier to-the-mails fee, Very Fine.

Lot 1608    

Rochester Savings Bank, black bee hive cameo on back flap of buff cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) horizontal pair, s.e. at left and tiny cut at top, tied by two strikes of "Rochester N.Y. Jul 22, 1863" duplex with patent cancel and addressed locally, prepaid at the 2¢ drop rate, l863 docketing at left, original July 22nd 1863 enclosure on bank letterhead included, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The 2¢ drop rate was in effect July 1st 1863 to May 1st 1865. It included carrier service if available, but Rochester did not have carrier service at this time.

Willoughby College for Both Sexes, corner card advertising unsealed cover bearing 1¢ blue, F. grill (93) horizontal pair, cancelled by quartered corks duplexed with indistinct cds to Munson O. at the 2¢ circular rate; some cover soiling and wear, Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Willoughby College was a Methodist school established in 1858.
