1851, 1¢ blue, type Ib, position 8R1E, top sheet margin, slightly in at sides with small nick at top right, used with 3¢ dull red (11A), both tied by two strikes of Charleston S.C. blue grid cancels on cover to Charleston S.C., photocopy of original enclosure accompanies datelined "Hampton April 19th 1852"; some cover wear, Fine, Scott retail of $17,000 on normal cover.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE USE OF THE TYPE IB FROM THE PREMIUM POSITION 8R1E PREPAYING THE 1¢ WAY FEE.

This cover was apparently mailed enroute from Hampton S.C. to Charleston S.C. with the franking prepaying the 3¢ letter rate plus to the mails 1¢ way fee.

According to Wilson Hulme, this is a characteristic October 1851 shade of experimental orange brown, however Dick Celler plated it as 3RO instead of plate 1L.
