1873 $3 Gold. Closed 3. PCGS graded AU-50. The 1873 Closed (or Close) 3 three dollar gold pieces struck for circulation are a mystery with no apparent solution in sight. It is thought that perhaps they may have been struck later than the date they bear. Guesses on the mintage have ranged from 100 to 1,000 pieces, but in any case they are keys to the series, usually found in XF or AU grades, as on the present AU50 coin. (PCGS Pop. 6 in AU-50, 52 graded higher, the highest grade being two MS-64 examples. Total of 65 in all grades, 9/26/11).Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.
