Union Line Express, Cleveland Ohio, black on yellow label, used in conjunction with black on orange "Money Package by the American Express, Zanesville, O." label on yellow cover to Middleburg, Ohio, pencil "Ex 2/-" rating for 25¢ express fee, "$23.00" money letter endorsement; no flap, soiling and wear, small edge tear, F.-V.F. and scarce conjunctive use.

United States & Canada Express, Fiske & Co., Brattleboro, Vt., large black on orange express label, some oxidizing, usd on orange buff legal-size cover with "Paid B" rating to Boston, Mass.; reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F. and scarce Vermont express label use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Company was established by a circa 1855 merger of Fiske & Co. and Cheney & Co. Apparently it operated two divisions, one with Fiske & Co., proprietors, the other with Cheney, Fiske & Co., proprietors. Exact sequence of mergers for this tree of expresses is presently unknown because of lack of documentation and scarcity of 1840s covers.

United States & Canada Express From Potsdam Junction., Cheney, Fiske & Co., Proprietors., large black on green express label used on reverse of buff legal-size July 21, 1863 United States and Canada Express money envelope containing $164.00 from Potsdam Junction, N.Y. sent by railroad to Keeseville N.Y.; reduced slightly at right and corner nick, otherwise Very Fine.

Via New York and Erie Rail Road., Hillsdale, Mich., black on green express label, some abrasion, used in conjunction with "American Express Co., Cleveland, Obio" black on orange express label ("Obio" error for Ohio) on buff cover to Westfield N.Y., "$20-" money letter endorsement; slight toning, F.-V.F. and scarce conjuctive use from Michigan.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Unites States Express Co. was established in the 1850s and expanded to serve much of the mid-west.

It appears that both labels have a similar border-style and therefore were produced by same printer.

Thompson & Co. Western Express - Founded in 1844 by J.M. Thompson to operate between Boston and Albany via Springfield.
