1870, 10¢ brown, H. grill, N.B.N.C. printing, several clear grill points, tied by bold circle of wedges cancel, "P.O.D. U.S. Con. Genl. Shanghai Oct 12" cds on 1871 cover to North Prospect Me., neat "San Francisco Cal Nov 16" transit cds, blue "Forwarded by Russell & Co. Shanghai, Oct 11, 1871" backstamp; slightly reduced at right, Very Fine rare 10¢ grilled use from Shanghai, China; with 1991 P.F. certificate.

Carried on PMSS branch line "New York" that sailed Oct. 12th to Yokohama arriving Oct. 20th, it was then placed on the PMSS steamer "Japan" departing Oct. 23rd to San Francisco arriving Nov. 15th.

1871, 7¢ vermilion, N.B.N.C. printing, tied by quartered cork cancel, matching "San Francisco Cal., Sep 1" cds on 1872 cover to Copenhagen, Denmark, red "New York, Paid All via Bremen, Sep 11" exchange cds, carried by NGL Line Bremen from New York Sep. 11th to Southampton arriving Sep. 22nd, Copenhagen (9.26) arrival backstamp; small edge tear, Very Fine and rare 7¢ solo use at the 7¢ Danish Closed Mail rate via Bremen.
Scott No. 149    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

The American Packet direct to Copenhagen rate of 10¢ was eliminated December 31, 1872, when the new 7¢ Danish Closed Mail direct and via Bremen/Hamburg were effective. This is one of two recorded 7¢ Bank Note uses prepaying the DCM rate via Bremen/Hamburg, being the only one via Bremen..

1871, 7¢ vermilion, N.B.N.C. printing, used with 3¢ green (147), tied by quartered corks, matching "Lansing Ioa., May 13" cds on 1872 cover to Sondre Land, Norway, red "New York, Paid All, May 18" exchange cds, red crayon rating, carried by Baltic Lloyd Jason from New York May 18th to Stettin arriving Jun. 7th, Christiania (6.10.72) transit and Sondre Land (6.14) arrival backstamp; some arithmetic notes and top left edge nick, Fine and rare use to Norway via the Baltic Lloyd.
Scott No. 149    Estimate $400 - 600.

This was the only voyage for Jason on the Baltic Lloyd Line and according to Winter is not listed in N.R.P. Bonsor's North Atlantic Seaway. This is the only recorded letter to Norway on the Baltic Lloyd.

Nov 1" cds which also ties 15¢ on 1872 tissue-paper cover to Calcutta, India, red "Boston, Paid, Nov 1" cds with bright red crayon "18" cent credit to G.B. rating, sender's directive "Via Marseilles" crossed out and changed to via Southampton, red London Paid (11.13) transit cds and matching "1d" Colonial credit handstamp, reverse with Sea Post Office (11.29) and red Calcutta (12.16) arrival cds, stamps with some toning and small faults, cover with usual light wear, Very Fine and unusual combination to pay the 22¢ rate via Southampton.
