The addressee, Capt. W.E. Greenwell (1824-1886) was a distinguished member of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in all branches of field-work along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida and particularly along the coast of California and the islands outlying the southern portion.

Pkt., Jun 9" exchange cds on blue 1866 folded to Amsterdam, carried by American Packet Fulton, two-line "Paid-Only/England" handstamp, blue London (6.21) transit backstamp and ms. "2" schilling debit, red Amsterdam (6.22.66) arrival backstamp and ms. Dutch cents due rating; small edge tear, 1¢ small corner crease, Very Fine.
