Wells, Fargo & Co., blue oval on 3¢ green entire with printed "Wells, Fargo & Co." frank to San Francisco Cal., printed "Summit Hotel, on line of C.P.R.R" clamshell corner card; flap tear, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

"Jolly Jim" Cardwell opened the Summit Hotel perched at the top of what is now called Donner Summit. Its orientation was quite odd. It was located beside the railroad tracks with its front door directly upon the entrance between two railway snow sheds.

Wells, Fargo & Co., Black Diamond, Cal., two strikes of oval express handstamp on 2¢ brown entire with printed "Wells Fargo & Co." frank to Port Costa, Cal., company frank at top, Very Fine and rare, unlisted in Leutzinger.

(Wells, Fargo & Co., British Columbia & Vancouver Island) Wells Fargo & Co., Victoria, partial blue oval date stamp on 3¢ pink (U59) entire with "Wells Fargo" imprint to Sacramento Cal., unusually clear and bold strike of blue "Post Office, Victoria V.I." Coat of Arms blue handstamped postal frank; sealed opening tear at top into frank and flap replaced, Fine appearance.

Lot 58    

Wells, Fargo & Co., Ophir, blue-green oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 1-17) on buff cover to Gold Hill Cal., originally sent by mail collect with "Sacramento City, Cal., Nov 15" balloon cds and "5" rating handstamp, manuscript "Missent" and "Auburn Cal. Nov 21" cds, reverse with unusual blue negative "Wells Fargo Express, Ophir" circular handstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Gold Hill was a mining town in the Auburn Ravine west of Ophir. Though a place of considerable size, Gold Hill never had a Post Office.
