1847, 5¢ blackish brown, 4th printing, Ridgway "Mars Brown" color, red grid cancel, ample to mostly large margins, lovely rich color, Very Fine, a choice example of this scarce shade; with 1989 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ red brown, recut of left frame, showing a very early impression of the recut of left frame which also shows a slip of the engraver's tool with a light line extending from the frameline inwards between the "P" of "Post" and the "U" (this slip line only shows on the very earliest of impressions), red grid cancel, ample to large margins, rich color enhancing a early detailed impression, Very Fine; with 2010 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ red brown, showing wide break in frameline at left, top margin single, light red grid cancel, large margins with wide top sheet margin, strong vibrant color, Extremely Fine and choice, one of finest examples of this broken frameline variety with one of the widest frameline breaks known to exist, ex-Garrett & Wagshal; with 1974 P.F. certificate.
Scott Nos. 1    Estimate $400 - 600.

This break is known to have slowing widened as the plate worn over time. This break was eventually fixed by the recutting of the fr1953
ameline and a variety listed in the Scott catalog.

1847, 5¢ brown, full strike of black Herringbone cancel of Binghamton, N.Y. strong color, clear to ample margins, small flaws including light horizontal crease and small thin spots, F.-V.F. appearance, a very rare fancy cancellation with only a handful known in black; with 2002 & 2010 P.F. certificates.
