(Mariposa) Clark's Station, Cal., Oct 20th, 1881, manuscript postmark (MAR-580) on Big Tree Hotel corner card cover to San Francisco, franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote, receiving backstamp, Very Fine.

Lot 1003    

(Mariposa) Yosemite, Ca. / Nov 30, manuscript postmark on small 1869 cover to Pennsylvania, franked with manuscript canceled 1867, 3¢ red, F. grill; some slight cover soiling, otherwise Very Fine, this being the earliest known postmark from Yosemite and unlisted in Williams.
Scott Nos. 94    Estimate $400 - 600.

The Yosemite post office opened on August 9th of 1869. This very early cover was posted a little over three months after the office was opened.

Lot 1004    

(Mariposa) Yosemite Valley, Apr 19, manuscript postmark on cover to Wyalusing, Pa., franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote, reverse with allover "Yo Semite Falls Hotel" ad, with original 1877 hotel letterhead enclosure and additional hotel card with matching cover ad and reverse with "Table of Altitudes at Yo Semite Valley"; some cover edge wear, F.-V.F., the only known manuscript postmark bearing the "Yosemite Valley" name.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

This cover is in all likely the Williams MAR-2190 postmark however Williams tentative date for this is 1870. This cover actually falls between the use of the "Yosemite Hotel" first handstamp used between 1871-74 and the second handstamp reading "Yosemite Valley" used between 1879-81.

(Mariposa) Yosemite Hotel, Yos. Valley, J.M. Hutchings, Prop., Jun 25, 1874, blue double circle handstamp (MAR-2200) on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Wisconsin, with black Wells, Fargo & Co. frank at top, F.-V.F., a rare example of the first device used at Yosemite.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

(Mariposa) Yo Semite, July 4, manuscript postmark on 1874, 3¢ green entire to Alameda, Cal., ca. 1876 usage; cover with partial backflap and shallow edge nick at top, F.-V.F., a very rare manuscript postmark with the "Yo Semite" spelling, with only three examples known to us.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

(Nevada) Rough & Ready, Cala. Feb 25-, manuscript postmark (Williams NEV-2000) at left with matching "40" rating on buff cover to Reynoldsburg O., enclosed letter datelined "Feby 22d 1851" from miner to his parents with some interesting mining content… Men run wild with excitement in this country there are always some large stories afloat some newly discovered & very rich diggings 150 or 200 miles away & men are continually running hither & thither but those rich places are seldom found nowadays very scarce…The country is full of men who are searching all over for the gold which is all over the country but not in quantities sufficient to suit the digger there are undoubtedly many very rich and extensive mines yet to be discovered but there are many men to work them out. I shall be well pleased when it comes my turn to leave my share of this country to hands that are more willing to do the hard work & accept the miners fare…, F.-V.F. and scarce 40¢ usage with interesting mining content.
