Lot 1044    

(Chorpenning Route) Salt Lake City, Utah, Aug 1, two strikes of cds tying 1851, 3¢ dull red (11A) and canceling 1855, 3¢ Nesbitt entire (U4) to Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, reverse with 1855 docketing and missing backflap, Very Fine, a great usage to Hawaii carried on the very rare Chorpenning Route via the Mormon Trail, ex-Kramer.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A RARE SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY USE VIA THE CHORPENNING MAIL ROUTE VIA LOS ANGELES AND SAN FRANCISCO.

The cover is addressed to Orson K. Whitney from John Whitney's wife and son, both of whom are relatives of Henry Whitney, the first Postmaster in Hawaii, who issued the famous Hawaiian Missionary Stamps.

Overland, Via Los Angeles., illustrated six-horse stagecoach design with "Published by Randal & Co., Marysville" imprint below, on cover to Knightstown, Ind. franked with 1857, 10¢ green, type V (dry print) canceled by blue waffle grid handstamp, matching "Marysville, Cal., Feb 28" cds; cover cleaned and reduced at right, Very Fine appearance.

Steam Manzanillo, full bold strike of oval handstamp with May 6, 1865 double cds of San Francisco, Cal. (Williams SAF-600) on cover, correct double rate of 20¢ with manuscript blue crayon "20" due marking; slight cover corner wear and restored part right edge removed from opening, Fine and rare.

Steam Manzanillo, full strike of oval handstamp with May 6, 1865 double cds of San Francisco, Cal. (Williams SAF-600) on incoming cover from Colima, Mexico, correct double rate of 20¢ with manuscript blue crayon "20" due marking, bold oval Colima origin postmark (Colima is approximately 50 miles inland from the port of Manzanillo), reverse with matching "3" reales rate handstamp; cover with rebacked edge wear, Fine, still a choice strike of this rare steamship route marking.

Via Nicaragua, In Advance of the Mails, Sullivan, clear full strike of oval handstamp on 1854 cover to Providence, R.I., with matching "6" in oval rate handstamp, entered the U.S. mails with "New - York, Ship 7cts, Apr 7" cds, with original enclosure datelined "San Francisco, July 16th, 1854", Very Fine, a very scarce usage bearing the seldom seen oval "6" rate handstamp, ex-Knapp & Haas.

(Via Panama) 1851 Hand Carried Letters to N.Y. Delivered By Boyd's City Express, two folded letters; one datelined "New Orleans Hotel, Panama, Tuesday May 27th/51" written by traveler to California with great content about trip across Panama Isthmus, other datelined "Sacramento, April 13th 1851" with some interesting content regarding daily life in Sacramento, both street addressed with similar Boyd's oval date stamps; the latter with some light edge staining at right, otherwise Very Fine.

(Via Panama) Incoming 1849 Cover Valparaiso to San Francisco, August 29th folded letter with manuscript 60 for double rate, reverse with full Forwarded By, Smith & Lewis, Panama oval handstamp on reverse, Very Fine, carried from Panama to San Francisco per Steamer "Panama", ex-Pearce.

(Via Panama) Incoming 1862 Cover Valparaiso to San Francisco, folded cover to San Francisco, California, red "Paid To Panama" handstamp and red manuscript "1/"rate which paid the half ounce letter rate to Panama, black "Panama Mr 13 1862 B" British P.O. in Panama transit cds, "San Francisco Cal Ap 6 1863" receiving cds and "20" due (steamship rate for over 2500 miles), faint "Valparaiso 18 Fe 1862" British P.O. cds on the reverse, Very Fine, ex-Jessup & Pearce.

Lot 1052 ()   

Via Southern Overland Mail, routing endorsement on rebacked cover front to agent at the National Telegraph in St. Louis, Mo., franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "Sonora, Cal., Jan 25" cds, with "Due 7" rating cross-out (under 3,000 miles rate), Very Fine appearance, a rare usage sent over the Jackass Route.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This cover carried a message to the National Telegraph office in St. Louis where the message was then telegraphed to the east coast thereby saving three days time.
