Charter Oak of Thomaston, Ct., complete neat strike tying 1861, 3¢ rose on fresh corner card cover to Avon, N.Y., matching "Thomaston, Conn., Sep 13" cds alongside, 1866 docketing at left; cover missing most of backflap, an Extremely Fine strike; with 2015 P.F. certificate. Scott Nos. 65.
Skinner-Eno Nos. PP-T 3    Estimate $500 - 750.

The Charter Oak was an enormous white oak tree growing on Wyllys Hyll in Hartford until it fell during a storm in 1856. According to tradition, Connecticut's Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden within the tree's hollow to thwart its confiscation by the English governor-general.

"Four Hearts" Fancy Cancel of Waterbury, Ct (type 2), full bold strike tying 1879, 1¢ ultramarine on fresh locally addressed cover with printed tailor ad inside, matching "Waterbury, Conn., Apr 22" cds alongside, Very Fine and choice, rarity RR - less than 16 examples known, an early use of this cancellation as part of one heart eventually wore off; with 2022 Crowe certificate. by manuscript "9" (day); couple small sealed cover tears at top and partial backflap, otherwise Very Fine, accompanied by second manuscript postmark cover from 1860 with original enclosure.
