Mexico, (Jalapa) 4r Dull Rose on Yellow, without District Overprint, issued during the French occupation, central Jalapa oval cancel (Schatzkes 600), Very Fine and choice, incredibly rare as only 60 are believed to have been issued (NF $1,200), a similar example sold in our sale of the collection of Dr. Manuel Iglesias (Sale #114, Lot #390) for $1,700 hammer; with 2000 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

The 4r Red on Yellow stamps were printed in parallel to the 4r Black on Yellow to combat the illegal use of splits from six larger districts. However, at the end of the issue, with the central post office in disarray, the small balance of the 4r Red stamps on hand was sent in small amounts to 16 other districts including Jalapa. All those are rarities.

Mexico, Jalapa 8r Black on Red Brown, in combination with 1861, 1r black on green + 2r black on green, Jalapa on fresh 1862 folded letter to Puebla, tied by bold boxed Jalapa date stamp postmarks (Schatzkes 595), Very Fine, any cover with an 8r stamp is rare as the regular rate was 2r and tricolor covers are very rare, ex-Larranaga & Mazepa; with 1993 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
