1870, 90¢ carmine, without grill, N.B.N.C. printing, used with a 12¢ dull violet (151), the two tied by neat blue grids on a large part of an 1873 (docketing on reverse) legal document sent from Cincinnati to St. Louis with a perfectly struck blue "Cincinnati Oct 1" target duplex postmark; reduced neatly at both ends, the 90¢ with a small, light crease at upper right, otherwise Very Fine. ex-Newbury; with 1995 P.F. certificate.

1875, 2¢ vermilion, C.B.N.C. printing, horizontal pair, in combination with 1879, 1¢ gray blue (182) on cover addressed to U.S. Navy Ensign aboard the U.S.C.G. Survey Steamer "Hassler" near Smith's Ranch, Cal. off the coast in "Bodega Bay", all tied by grid handstamps with matching "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 12" cds alongside; cover reduced at right into 1¢, Fine, the "Hassler", a United States Coast Survey schooner, was the first iron-hulled steamship used in the service of the U.S. Coast Survey.
