A VERY RARE COMMERCIAL USE OF THE 5¢ CARMINE ERROR, PERF 10, WHICH SERVED AS PAYMENT OF THE 2¢ RATE.
The plate containing the 5¢ transfer errors escaped detection during production and inspection, and the resulting stamps were released to the public in early 1917. A limited number of sheets were perforated gauge 10 (Scott 467), followed by a larger printing with the new 11-gauge perforations (Scott 505), all distributed through post offices.
On May 2, 1917, the United States Post Office Department, through the Third Assistant Postmaster General, issued a printed notice advising postmasters of the error and ordering the recall of the error sheets.
According to the updated census compiled by Kevin Lowther and published in The United States Specialist (2012, Issue 993), only 18 covers or large pieces are recorded bearing the 5¢ Carmine error, Perf 10 (Scott 467). The present example represents a genuine non-philatelic commercial use.
