Hawaii, Honolulu Advertised, Sep 20, red cds (9ADV-cds(no year)-I, 1RRRR) on incoming U.S. 1864, 3c pink entire (U59) to Honolulu, canceled by "New Haven, Coon., Jul 9" cds and negative star duplex, with sender's manuscript directive at top left "Per Steamer, Via San Francisco", addressed to Rev. Hiram Bingham (Jr.) who had just left for the Marquesas Islands; some staining at top right affecting indicia, Very Fine, one of only two recorded examples of this advertising date stamp in red (both with the Sep. 20 date), ex-Bingham III, Meyer & Golden.Estimate $750 - 1,000.
AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE LARGE HONOLULU "ADVERTISED" DATE STAMP IN RED - ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES.
Hiram Bingham, Jr. had followed in his father's footsteps, becoming an ordained Congregationalist minister in 1856 at the age of 25. He and his wife Clara (Brewster) then traveled to Hawaii and would spend many years ministering there and in various South Pacific island communities, before returning briefly to the United States in 1865. The couple returned to Honolulu on March 13, 1867, with Rev. Bingham as captain on the schooner-brig Morning Star II's maiden voyage, having departed from Boston the previous year on Nov. 13, 1866. After a brief visit with friends and fellow missionaries in Honolulu, they left for the Marquesas Islands on Mar. 28, returning to Honolulu on June 10. They then left for a second voyage to Micronesia on July 1, visiting over a dozen other mission stations including Tarawa, Apaiang, and Ponape, returning to Honolulu once again on Jan. 24, 1868. At that point, they would have likely collected this letter, as it was found in a bundle of other letters saved by their son, Hiram Bingham III, of Machu Picchu, Peru fame.

FEWER THAN 10 EXAMPLES OF THIS "LATE LETTER" MARKING ARE RECORDED.
A 5¢ international rate applied to member countries during the U.P.U. period. For three years, starting in 1882, letters brought to the Honolulu post office for inclusion in the outgoing mail after the posted closing time were charged an additional 5¢ late letter fee.

A VERY RARE USAGE OF THE HONOLULU "LATE LETTER MAIL" SUPPLEMENTARY RATE MARKING.
This mark reflects payment of an extra fee of 5¢, after the posted closing time for a mail shipment, to have a sender's letter included in the outgoing mail bag. This marking is known to be used between July 2, 1882 and October 1, 1884. The sender in this instance aid the extra 5c fee in cash.
Carried on the Oceanic Line steamship Alameda (dep. Honolulu Apr. 1, 1884; arr. SF Apr. 8).

Gregory notes only one example of the "Missent to Honolulu." marking, in purple, on a cover from Germany to New Jersey (and missent to Honolulu) dated Jan. 1898. The cover offered here, in red, is now the latest known usage, by over a year and a half.
