Hawaii, Pr Bark Yankee, manuscript ship endorsement on cover to San Francisco, privately carried by ship and entered the mails with "San Francisco, Cal, Apr 10, 1860" cds, matching clamshell "Ship 6" rate handstamp at right, Very Fine, treated as an unpaid ship letter and not as a drop letter likely due to the ship endorsement.

Scott No. 52    Estimate $300 - 400.

The "Kulumanu", was a schooner registered under the Hawaiian flag in 1885. She stayed in service until after 1900.

Hawaii, N-Z Marine P.O., 8 Au 96, cds's (McNaught type 7) tying 1894, 1¢ yellow + 2¢ brown, horizontal pair on cover to Astoria, Oregon, reverse with "San Francisco, Paid All, Aug 27, 1896" transit and receiving cds's; few light cover soil spots and corner clip at top right affecting left 2¢ stamp, F.-V.F., a rare New Zealand Marine P.O. usage posted aboard the Alameda.

Hawaii, Per S.S. James Makee, red straight line handstamp on cover to Kapaa, Kauai, franked with 1894, 2¢ brown, left margin single (75) tied by "Honolulu, Feb 4, 1898" duplex, Extremely Fine, this being the finer of two recorded examples of this rare mark, unlisted in Gregory's ship marks.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Lot 98    

Hawaii, U.S.S. Iroquois, purple handstamp (1RRRR) on cover from San Francisco to Berkeley, California, then forwarded to Honolulu, franked with U.S. 1899, 2¢ carmine (279B) tied by "San Francisco, Cal., Oct 1, 00" machine postmark, Berkeley forwarding postmark, reverse with "Honolulu, H. Isls., Oct 11, 1900" receiving postmark; stamp with some gum toning, otherwise Very Fine, Gregory notes this marking used on two earlier covers (pre-June 14, 1900), ex-Rawlins.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The U.S.S. Iroquois (AT-46) was a 713 ton steam tugboat built in San Francisco (Union Iron Works) in 1892, bought by the Navy in 1898 for use in the Spanish-American war. In early 1899, she left Mare Island for duty in the Hawaiian Islands, arriving at Honolulu on Jan. 28, 1899 where she remained for some time after Hawaii became an official U.S. Territory.
