Lot 408    

San Francisco, Cal. (San Francisco). 1850 folded cover to St. Louis, Mo. with contents with partial New York "Steam Ship" handstamp and "80" in circle due handstamp, eighty cents due represents double the forty cents Pacific coast letter rate (1-Jul-1847 through 30-Jun-1851). This is a scarce rate, and only a few examples of this handstamp are known. Two sheets of paper enclosures consisting of 8 written pages, F.-V.F., illustrated in J. Wierenga United States Incoming Steamship Mail, 1847-1875, ex Jessup.

Chillicothe Ohio Dec 13. Oval postmark on 1815 folded letter sheet to Cincinnati forwarded to Marietta, Ohio, manuscript "Paid 18¾" rate, "Forwarded Cincinnati 18 Dec 1815" over origin postmark and re-rated "25½" just beneath the original rate mark, initially paid rate of 18¾¢ based on the 12½¢ zone rate for 90-150 miles plus 50% increase or 6¼¢ war rate, forwarding rate of 25½¢ from Cincinnati to Marietta was in the 150-300 miles zone with an initial rate of 17¢ plus 50% increase or 8½¢ war rate; sealed tear at top not detracting, F.-V.F.

Small group of 10 better 19th century Cincinnati covers including a 1847 5¢, 1857 12¢ pair on cover to London, 1861 10¢ on cover to "US Flag Ship Powhaton" in Panama, 7¢ Banknote on cover to Germany, large part cover franked with 15¢ + 30¢ pair of Bank Notes, 1851 3¢ orange brown tied by scarce balloon type "Louisville & Cincinnati Mail Line" cds, etc., also nice engraving of Cincinnati view by Continental Bank Note Co., mixed condition.
