Lot 209    

Ascension, 1890 Ascension to Boston. Franked with Great Britain 1d pair + 4d tied by "Ascension" cds's on cover to Boston & forwarded to Chicago, cover backstamped with rare light blue oval "U.S. Eclipse Expedition to West Africa/1889/Navy Department/Apr. 3, 1890" handstamp, along with transit & arrival markings, some ink smearing on reverse, Very Fine, a stunning & rare item.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The "U.S.S. Pensacola" sailed from New-York Oct. 16, 1889 on the solar eclipse expedition, carrying a scientific expedition sent to the west coast of Africa under the auspices of the Bureau of Navigation of the Navy Department to observe the total eclipse of the sun that was visible there Dec. 22. The expedition was a failure as a number of scientists, did not travel to the original observation site as a result of an outbreak of malaria and were unable to view the eclipse at the secondary site, due to overcast conditions. This cover was mailed upon the return voyage.

Bermuda, 1915 Bermuda to New York, N.Y. 2½d tied by partial Bermuda machine cancel, U.S. 10¢ special delivery (E11, pulled perf at bottom) tied by "New York Hudson Term Sta" duplex cancel, used to obtain special delivery service within the U.S., various censor and transit markings, F.-V.F.

Brazil, 1854 Bahia, Brazil to Portugal. Partial black cds on 1854 folded letter with a blue "240" Re-Issues due hand-stamped upper right corner, and black manuscript "Per Great Western" routing in the lower left corner, backstamped blue "P. Transatlantico 8 9 (54)" cds & partial octagonal "Porto 18 54 9" hand-stamped, Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Probably carried per the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. steamer "Great Western", departing Bahia 19-Aug, arriving Lisbon 6-Sep.

British Guiana, 1864 Cover to United States. An attractive small ladies cover to New York franked with 1860 2c + 8c tied by barred oval "AO3" with Demerara backstamp, black "Boston, Mass./10" debit cds & "St. Thomas" cds applied in transit, trivial small cover tear at top, Very Fine and attractive.

New Brunswick, 1856 Folded Cover to Glasgow. Attractive blue folded letter with scarce "New-Bk 1d Claim" & "6d" rate handstamps, backstamped St. Johns, New Brunswick cds, Liverpool Pkt. Letter & Glasgow arrival, vertical cover fold, Very Fine and scarce, this marking was used on packet letters to denote postage accruing to the Colonial & General Post Office.

Canada, 1839 Cover to London. A wonderful stampless cover with red "London Apr5/39" (Canada) postmark with boxed "Paid" handstamp & magenta manuscript "9" rate marking which has been crossed out, sent via Toronto with large double circle "City of Toronto/ Ap 9 1839" postmark with corrected straight line "Paid 7 & 25" rate handstamp applied with manuscript "Via New York", red transit cds of New York/Apl 15, backstamped "Liverpool Ship Letter" handstamp, light file fold, Very Fine, scarce rate handstamp of 7d to the border & 25c to New York.

Canada, Montreal, Canada to London, England. 1839 folded letter with partial red "Montreal L.C., No 26 1839" cds, endorsed "double only…." & "p British Queen Steam Packet", red "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "37½" rate (double 18?¢ from Canadian border to New York), additional "Paid" handstamp with "9" just beneath (4 ½ per half ounce x 2) and both rates crossed through, manuscript "2/" which probably represents double 8d private ship fee + 4d British inland from Gravesend to London to be collected from the addressee, reverse with red framed "Ship Letter Gravesend" handstamp, and "F DE 26, 1839" receiving cds, F.-V.F., there is no indication as what was charged for freight money, but this was definitely per the British Queen and was either collected or neglected somehow, departed New York 2-Dec. & arriving Gravesend (London) 26-Dec.
