1875 Cover to Nicaragua. Franked with Bank Note issue 1¢ + 3¢ pairs + 10¢ tied on cover by New York Foreign Mail Pin Wheels & cds with red New-York/8 credit cds alongside, postmarked in transit by British Post Office "Colon" cds, stamps with perf faults & corner of cover at top left replaced, Fine, a very rare usage on the last day of the 18¢ British Mail rate (6/30/75).

1875 Two Covers to Argentina. Two covers both franked with 3¢ green Bank Note, two horizontal strips of three tied by circle of wedges cancels, one with "Bath N.Y., May 20" & other a N.J. origin cds, former with red "New York, May 24, 8" exchange, Rio De Janeiro transit and Buenos Aires receiving backstamps (one 3¢ stamp slightly overlapping cover at right), other short paid with "Due 5" in manuscript, F.-V.F.

1878 Folded Cover to Columbia. Folded cover franked with 3¢ green + 10¢ brown Bank Notes tied by "New York, N.Y." cds's, red "New York Oct 12 8" credit cds and violet oval "Forwarded By / R.C. Crompton, / Colon" handstamp with partial British Post Office Colon transit cds above; 10¢ natural s.e. at right & pulled corner perf, Very Fine.

1917 Cover to Brazil. With green advertising corner card franked with 2¢ Washington-Franklin tied by "Chicago" machine cancel with Brazil 200r Postage Due tied by "Rio de Janeiro" postmark, cover sent back with 6¢ postage due on arrival, paid by 1¢ Due + 5¢ Parcel Post Postage Due, which appear to be precanceled, Very Fine.

1856 Folded Letter to Nova Scotia. Postmarked large red "Boston Br. Pkt/Paid" cds with small green & white circular label of "Geo. H. Gray & Danforth/Boston" on reverse, these & similar labels were used as Express labels, however this appears to be used as a company sealing label, tiny portion of label cut off upon opening, Fine and rare.

Lot 179    

1896 Wreck of the S.S. "Ailsa". Cover from Boston, Massachusetts to Kingston, Jamaica, reverse with label "This article of Mail matter has been recovered from the wreck of the S.S. "Ailsa" which sunk in New York Harbour on 29th February, 1896. GEO. H. PEARCE, P.M. Jamaica, P.O. Jamaica, 17th April, 1896.", cover forwarded back to Charleston, Mass.; contemporary soiling and missing stamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Atlas steamer Ailsa of Glasgow was due to leave New York on 29th February for Jamaica and Port Limon. She was anchored in the harbor when the steamer La Bourgogne came into collision with her in a dense fog, cutting her almost halfway through. The mails were subsequently salvaged.

Franked with 1903, 2¢ carmine, type I tied by "Franklinville, N.Y., Jan 4, 1907" cds to Shanghai, China, forwarded to Tientsin and return, reverse with China Postage Dues 2¢ + 10¢ pair and single (Scott #J45+J48) tied by Tientsin cds's with "Shanghai, China/U.S. Postal Sta. Rec'd" cds & Washington, D.C. "Dead Letter Office" postmarks, F.-V.F.
