Tallac, California (El Dorado), violet double circle postmark (Williams ELD-3880) with fancy star duplex on 1887 2¢ entire to Redwood City, with matching "Cascade House, E. Clement, Proprietor, Lake Tahoe, Cal." corner card; cover reduced at left, Very Fine, a lovely cover, Ephram Clement owner of the Cascade House was also the first Postmaster of Tallac.

Lot 331    

Toll House, Cal., Nov 7, 1887 (Fresno), clear cds on cover to Indiana, franked with 1887, 1¢ ultramarine + 1883, 2¢ red brown tied by grid cancels; minor cover edge flaws, Very Fine, a scarce postmark known used for a little over one year.

Truckee, Cal. (Nevada), clear cds (Williams NEV-2320) on 1872 Tahoe House corner card cover, franked with 3¢ banknote canceled by matching target, Very Fine.

Lot 333    

Vernon, Sept. 17 (Sutter), manuscript postmark (SUT-900) with "5" rate on 1851 folded letter sheet to State Secretary in Vallejo, Cal., "Election Returns" endorsement, slight cover staining and file folds, F.-V.F., ranked as the rarest of the 1849 towns that are known, we can only recollect one of these being sold in the last 10 years publicly plus one privately.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Volcano Bar, M. Fork American River April 7th, 1851 (Calaveras), dateline on folded letter to Guilford, Vt., entered the mails with red "Sacramento City, Cal., Apr 7" cds (Williams SAC-2520) and matching "40" rate handstamp, 2-page letter describes having failed at damming last winter but he now has portions of 2 more damming operations and cleared $1,200 mining on his own in the last 3 months, running a very profitable store; cover with minor aging, Very Fine, letter sent 6 months before post office in Volcano opened.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Volcano, Cal., June 29 (Amador), town postmark (Williams AMA-1520) with "Paid 3" in circle handstamp, on 1855 cover to Yuba City, Cal., with short masonic lodge letter, Very Fine.

Lot 336    

Washington Flat California, Mercede River, February the 23, 1857 (Mariposa), dateline on folded letter addressed to Vermont and carried completely outside the mails, lengthy 3-page letter tells of getting $1,200 for a claim and wanting to sell the current claim for a $1,000, coming home for a visit next spring, and the prices he pays for supplies brought to his door, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Washington Flat, on the north side of the Merced River above Bagby, was a very small mining camp from 1850. In 1859, John Fremont built a dam at Ridley's Ferry that flooded out all the remaining miners.

Weaverville, Cal., May 30 (Trinity), oval date stamp with manuscript date, on 1854 folded letter to Bigorre, France, matching "Paid" straight line handstamp and manuscript "26" rate over manuscript "Paid 40c", red "New York, Am. Packet, Jul 15" exchange cds and Calais French entry postmark, manuscript "8" decimes due and reverse with Paris transit and receiving date stamps; light cover toning at top, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Weaverville, Cal., May 29 (Trinity), red oval postmark with manuscript date (Williams TRI-2020) & matching arched "Paid 3" handstamp, on 1855 cover to San Jose, Cal., with original enclosure regarding good mining in the area; small sealed cover tears and slight soiling, otherwise F.-V.F., a very rare postmark in red.
