Steam Acapulco, partially clear oval on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, Cal., canceled by "San Francisco, Cal, July 24" cds (Williams SAF-600) with cogwheel killer, the rate was 10¢ for under 2,500 miles thus the "Due 7" handstamp, tiny edge tear at top, Very Fine.

Steam Acapulco, partially clear oval handstamp with "San Francisco, Cal., Nov. 28, 1864" cds (Williams SAF-600) with cogwheel killers tying two 1861, 3¢ rose singles on cover, correct double rate of 20¢ with manuscript blue "14" due marking, two tears at top; cover with couple tears at top and reduced at right, Fine, a very scarce double rate cover.

Lot 350    

Steam Acapulco and Steam Panama, 2 partially off at top oval "Steam Acapulco" steamship marks over "Steam Panama" handstamp, on ca. 1870 cover to Plymouth, Mass., this proves these "Steam" handstamps were applied in San Francisco not in the consular offices, "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 14" cds (Williams SAF-810) with "3" due marking, endorsed "From U.S.C. Survey, Steamer Hassler" at lower left, a concession was given to Naval personnel to send letters due which waived the ship captain's fee of 2¢ therefore a rate of 3¢ normal postage if on a federally controlled ship, Very Fine, another view of the rating on this cover is that it was not in a Federally controlled ship (this mail was carried on Pacific Steamship Company ships) and should have carried the normal 10¢ rate, this dual handstamp usage is unique based on the Meyer Survey.

Steam Manzanillo, full bold strike of oval handstamp with May 6, 1865 double cds of San Francisco, Cal. (Williams SAF-600) on cover, correct double rate of 20¢ with manuscript blue crayon "20" due marking; slight cover corner wear and restored part right edge removed from opening, Fine and rare.

Steam Manzanillo, full strike of oval handstamp with May 6, 1865 double cds of San Francisco, Cal. (Williams SAF-600) on incoming cover from Colima, Mexico, correct double rate of 20¢ with manuscript blue crayon "20" due marking, bold oval Colima origin postmark (Colima is approximately 50 miles inland from the port of Manzanillo), reverse with matching "3" reales rate handstamp; cover with rebacked edge wear, Fine, still a choice strike of this rare steamship route marking.

Steam Mazatlan, clear strike of oval handstamp with "San Francisco, Cal., May 16, 1865" cds (Williams SAF-600) on folded letter docketed "Mazatlan 9th May, 1865", matching "10" due marking and light "Franco" in wreath handstamp applied by the Mazatlan post office; cover refolded at left and top, otherwise Very Fine, a very attractive usage from Mazatlan.
