New York, 40cts Paid, Sep 10. Red integral rate handstamp on 1850 folded letter to San Francisco, with "Empire City" endorsement; cover file folds, F.-V.F., sent by the Empire City Line which had no contract to carry the mails, however was allowed to carry the mails between July 17th 1849 & October 1850.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 54    

New York, 6, Oct 25. Red integral rate cds with matching straight line "Paid" and pencil "6" rate, on 1851 folded letter to San Francisco, Harbeck & Co. forward oval and "Illinois" ship endorsement, contents duplicate of original sent per "Daniel Webster", Very Fine, letter sent via Panama while original letter sent via Nicaragua, a practice merchants often used in event one of the letters was detained in transit.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Pacific Express Co., Panama & Aspinwall. Red oval handstamp on fresh Panama N.G., February 4, 1856 "Steamer Edition" of the Star & Herald newspaper, published expressly for "J. Hawes & Co., Agents Pacific Express Company", articles including Walker in Central America, Very Fine.

(San Francisco) Incoming 1849 Cover Valparaiso to San Francisco. August 29th folded letter with manuscript 60 for double rate, reverse with full Forwarded By, Smith & Lewis, Panama oval handstamp on reverse, Very Fine, carried from Panama to San Francisco per Steamer "Panama", ex Pearce.

Steamer Winfield Scott. Full sharp strike of red two-line handstamp centrally struck on 1852 folded letter sheet from Valparaiso, Chile to San Francisco, Cal., endorsed "via Panama, pr Vapor Winfield Scott" at top, entered the west coast mails with "San Francisco, Cal., Apr 29" cds and matching "Ship 6" clamshell ship rate handstamp, Extremely Fine, a wonderful and unique via Panama transit usage aboard the Steamer Winfield Scott's maiden voyage from New York to San Francisco for its service between Panama & S.F. for the Independent Line, only nine examples of this two-line steamer handstamp are recorded, ex Haas.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Bell, Stationer, 153 Montgomery St. San Francisco" on rebacked cover front, franked with 1857 1¢ blue, type V + three 3¢ dull red tied by "Santa Rosa, Cal." cds to Varna, NY., adhesives with few minor faults & 1¢ may not belong, Very Fine appearance; with 2007 P.F. certificate.
