Red cds on 1851 folded cover to San Francisco with scarce red "12½" rate marking paying the internal California rate, lengthy letter addressed to General John Wilson & mentions, I have taken a large interest in Capt. John A. Sutter's Claim…, mended tear at bottom, F.-V.F.

Sacramento City, March 28 1851. Dateline on lengthy 2 page letter, with original cover to Harrisburg, Ohio privately carried with "politeness of Capt. D.D. Long" endorsement, letter mentioning Capt. Longs return home as well as other returning, an enclosed $10 gold piece (light impression of coin can be seen on reverse of cover), Very Fine.

San Francisco, Cal. (San Francisco) 6¢ Rate Period. Small lot of four cover franked with two 3¢ 1851 issue from San Francisco to the East, one of which is an orange brown pair, also included is a cover from Boston franked with two 3¢ 1851 & forwarded from San Francisco to Sonora with handstamped "5" rate marking, a single 3¢ 1851 on cover to Alviso, Ca., plus a 1¢ 1851 on unsealed cover with "via Panama" endorsement & adhesive tied by New York grid, cover undoubtedly originated in San Francisco paying the circular rate, mixed condition, F.-V.F.
